Embassy of Kuwait gives boost to VUB’s Arabic Language Classes Project for Children
VUB’s Arabic Language Classes Project receives donation from Embassy of Kuwait

On Friday 16 November 2018 the Embassy of the State of Kuwait donated €15,000 to the Vrije Universiteit Brussel’s Arabic Language Classes project.

The Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Jasem AlBudaiwi pointed out that this project meets a need in Brussels to help children who grow up here stay in touch with their families back home and to encourage intercultural integration: “We thank the VUB for running this Arabic Language Classes programme and we are proud to support them. Language forms an essential part of a human being’s identity, which leads to better adaptation and integration in any society. Opening our horizons to other societies and cultures is key to build stronger communities.”

The VUB’s Arabic Language Classes project started in 2016 and has become a big success. Classes are now held for 300 school children (aged between 6-15), with a waiting list to match, and are taught across four different schools in Brussels. All the classes are given extra-curricular on Wednesday afternoon, and on Saturday and Sunday. The project provides a neutral platform where children are taught Arabic in a school environment and learn intercultural skills. In addition, academics from the VUB monitor the content, the educational methods used and the learning outcomes.

The VUB’s Vice-Rector for Internationalisation, Prof dr Romain Meeusen explains: “The teachers involved in the project are refugees with a teaching background and have a tremendous amount of experience. Keeping them on requires the project to be sustainable from a financial point of view. The VUB Foundation has been active in this regard, and we are grateful for donations such as this one from the Embassy of Kuwait, as it will help to keep the project running. It will help the children develop into self-confident individuals with a sense of belonging and understanding of intercultural skills and values”.
